Employee Health

More and more employers are putting their money where their employees' best interest lies - in stronger health and wellness benefits. Chronic diseases such as depression, diabetes and high blood pressure can lead to a decline in the overall health of employees, contribute to increased health-related expenses for employers, and lead to a lot of sick days.

Many businesses have realized the benefits promoting good health, and to curb the costs of rising health care, they have begun offering employee wellness programs. Ideally, the office should be a place that protects the safety and well-being of employees AND also provides them opportunities for better long-term health.

Workplace wellness programs are designed to support healthy behavior while at work. These programs consist of activities such as health education, food coaching, weight management programs, medical screenings, on-site fitness programs, monthly weigh-ins and more.

Here are some creative and inexpensive ways to create a healthy work environment, improve employee morale and boost productivity:
Walk 30 minutes at lunch time, take stretching breaks, start a running club, subsidize gym memberships, purchase a new pair of running shoes for employees, take the steps instead of elevator, or sponsor a corporate fitness challenge.
Look at vending machines and offer healthier options, including bottled water. Bring in a steady supply of fruits and vegetables. Stock the shelves with nuts or light popcorn instead of candy and chips, for example.
Encourage vendors to bring in low-calorie lunches. Instead of donuts, have vendors deliver gift cards to local restaurants or grocery stores for rewards. Hold a healthy food potluck.
Create a culture of wellness by adding wellness tips to your monthly employee newsletter, post local fitness class events, offer to pay for group fitness classes if employees commit to attending.
Offer yearly biometric screenings so that employees know their BMI, cholesterol and glucose numbers. Remind employees to get regular dental and vision checkups.
Offer smoking cessation courses, flu shots, CPR and First Aid classes.

Ask your employer if they offer a wellness program. If not, suggest implementing one at your office because healthier employees are happier and more productive employees!
