New Year's Resolutions

About forty percent of Americans will make New Year's resolutions. Every January 1st we resolve to lose weight, exercise more, quit smoking, save money or get organized to name a few. But for all the good intentions, only eight percent of people achieve their New Year's goals.

Why do so many people fail and what are the secrets behind those who succeed?

Keep it simple - Many people make long lists or want extreme makeovers; but shooting for the moon approach is doomed to fail. Set small attainable goals throughout the year; instead of vowing to lose 15 pounds by July, vow to lose 2 or 3 pounds each month. It is the little things that can add up to positive changes.

Make it Real - A resolution to exercise more is not that easy to follow. Be specific. Don't say I am going to join a gym in 2015. Set a date and join a class. Resolve to take your dog for a 30 minute walk every day.

Make it Obvious - Sharing resolutions with others helps build accountability. Share your goals with family and friends. Visually track your goals by making a clear to-do list or write in a diary.

But resolutions don't have to always be about weight loss and exercise. Positive changes can include getting more sleep, getting more fresh air, clearing out clutter, getting your finances in order, watching less television, getting a hobby, and my favorite - putting down the smartphone.
